Natural Treatments for Yeast Infections

page backYeast infections (Candidiasis) are caused by an overgrowth of the Candida albicans fungus, a normal inhabitant of the gastrointestinal tract and vagina. Causes of overgrowth include antibiotics, infections, hormonal changes, and nutritional deficiencies. Symptoms include recurrent vaginal infections characterized by itching, burning, and a thick discharge.

Women with vaginal yeast infections should keep the vaginal area cool and dry. Wear loose clothing and cotton underpants, and avoid vaginal sprays and deodorants, which can disturb the acid-alkaline balance of the vagina.

Natural treatments for candidiasis involve reducing the factors that contribute to candida overgrowth and strengthening the immune system.

Nutrition and Supplements

Because the candida fungus feeds on simple sugars, avoiding alcohol, refined carbohydrates, and sugar in all forms is essential for overcoming candida overgrowth. Yeast infections may also be aggravated by dairy products, although the acidophilus in some yogurts may be helpful for reestablishing beneficial intestinal flora, which prevent opportunistic fungi such as Candida albicans from spreading. Seafood and vegetable proteins are preferable to meat and poultry, which may contain traces of antibiotics unless they are organically raised. Some candida sufferers may be sensitive to yeasted or fermented foods or those containing molds, such as aged cheeses, dried fruits, or mushrooms.

Supplements that may be useful in overcoming candida overgrowth include:

  • acidophilus and bifidobacteria, 1/2-1 teaspoon or two capsules three times a day: to repopulate the beneficial intestinal flora
  • vitamin B complex, 50 mg twice a day: to increase antibodies
  • vitamin C plus mixed bioflavonoids, 2-5 grams or to bowel tolerance: to strengthen immune response
  • vitamin A in the form of beta-carotene, 25,000 IU daily: to build resistance to infection
  • essential fatty acids: three to six capsules of evening primrose oil or two capsules of borage or black currant oil: to help reduce inflammatory or allergic responses
  • bromelain or papain, one to two tablets with each meal: to provide extra digestive enzymes

Herbal Remedies

The following antifungal herbs may help alleviate a yeast infection:

  • garlic, one to two raw cloves or capsules two to three times daily: some studies indicate that garlic is more effective against yeast infections than is nystatin, the conventional drug prescribed for the condition
  • pau d'arco, 1/2 teaspoon of tincture, I1 cup of tea, or two capsules three times daily: for its antiviral effects; several of its chemical constituents have been proven effective against Candida albicans
  • goldenseal or barberry, 1/2 teaspoon of tincture or two capsules twice daily; for their antifungal compound berberine. (Pregnant women should not use herbs containing berberine.)
  • usnea, 1/2 teaspoon of tincture two to three times daily; for its antifungal properties
