Natural Treatments for Diabetes

page backDiabetes and hypoglycemia occur when the body is unable to regulate blood sugar levels. Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, is caused by an excess of dietary sugar, which stimulates the pancreas to produce large amounts of insulin in order to lower the body's blood sugar to a normal level. If sugary foods are eaten frequently, the pancreas becomes hyperactive, releasing too much insulin and causing symptoms such as dizziness, anxiety, fatigue, headaches, and mental confusion. Many health professionals believe that hypoglycemia is a precursor to type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes is a more serious blood sugar disorder, affecting more than 10 million Americans. The disease occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin (type 1, or insulin-dependent diabetes) or when the cells become incapable of using insulin (type 2, or non-insulin-dependent diabetes). Without insulin, the body cannot metabolize glucose, and high levels of blood sugar result. Increased urination, thirst, fatigue, and weight loss are often the first symptoms. Complications related to high levels of blood sugar are severe and include heart disease, kidney damage, loss of vision, and impaired circulation.

Although people with type 1 diabetes must take insulin injections for life, with natural therapies it is possible to reduce insulin requirements. And those with type 2 diabetes (accounting for approximately 90 percent of cases) and hypoglycemia are often able to control the disease through weight loss, a high complex carbohydrate diet, and regular exercise. Yoga has been shown to be particularly helpful in controlling blood sugar levels and reducing insulin needs. Anyone with diabetes must he under the care of a health professional. Dietary and lifestyle changes affect blood sugar levels, and drug dosages will need to be adjusted.

Nutrition and Supplements

Emphasize high-fiber, high-complex carbohydrates, which provide a long-lasting, slow release form of energy. Of the daily food intake, 50 to 60 percent should be whole grains, root vegetables, and legumes. Eat liberal amounts of onions and garlic, both of which lower blood sugar levels and can help in controlling diabetes. Include about 20 percent lean proteins such as beans, tofu, fish and poultry. A high-fat diet exacerbates diabetes; avoid red meat, butter, and full fat dairy foods and keep total daily fat intake below 20 percent. Monounsaturated oils (such as olive and canola) have been shown to be helpful for diabetics. Eliminate all processed sugars and concentrated sweeteners such as honey, molasses, maple syrup, and even dried fruits. Fresh fruit is fine in moderation, but avoid fruit juices. Also avoid caffeine and alcohol because they cause rapid fluctuations in blood sugar levels. To prevent sudden swings in blood sugar, eat frequent small meals rather than one or two large meals. Try to establish a regular schedule of three meals a day with midmorning and mid-afternoon snacks.

Supplements that may be helpful in normalizing blood sugar levels include:

  • chromium, 100 micrograms three times daily: to help the body respond to insulin and normalize blood sugar levels
  • fiber supplements such as psyllium, 1 teaspoon three times daily with a large glass of water before meals: to help stabilize blood sugar
  • vitamin B complex, 50-100 mg daily: to help regulate carbohydrate metabolism

Supplements that are particularly helpful for diabetics include:

  • vitamin C, 2-5 grams daily or to bowel tolerance: helps prevent complications of diabetes such as poor wound healing, capillary fragility, and immune deficiency
  • vitamin E, begin with 100 IU daily and increase gradually to 400 IU: improves action of insulin. (Monitor insulin dosage because vitamin E may reduce insulin requirements.)
  • magnesium, 400 mg daily: levels are generally low in diabetics; supplement to help prevent complications such as heart disease and retinopathy
