WEIGHT LOSS HERBS

page backWeight loss is most effectively accomplished by changing the composition of one's diet from a regimen that is high in fat, cholesterol, and refined foods to a diet composed chiefly of whole grains, fresh vegetables, beans, and fruit. Studies have shown that by eating the latter diet made up exclusively of vegetable foods, overweight people can achieve dramatic weight loss, yet cat all the food they want. They never have to go hungry as long as they avoid all animal foods such as red meat, dairy products, and eggs. Nevertheless, certain herbs and nutritional supplements, such as those listed below, can effectively reduce cravings, promote overall good health, and help people lose weight.

Burdock Root
Chickweed
Chlorella
Cinnamon
Nettle Supplements
Royal Jelly
Spirulina

Burdock root (Arctium lappa) is an alternative, diaphoretic, and diuretic that is traditionally used to cleanse the blood and heal the kidneys and liver. It is one of the best blood purifiers known to traditional medicine. Burdock root can also help to reduce cravings and hunger and thus assist in weight loss. The best way to use burdock root for weight loss is as a standard decoction: Bring water to a boil, pour in about an ounce of dried burdock root, gently simmer for ten to twenty minutes, and allow to cool. Drink between meals.

Cinnamon, a common spice, has been found to triple insulin's ability to metabolize blood sugar, or glucose, according to research conducted at the Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University. Because of this ability, cinnamon protects against diabetes, reduces hunger, and helps control sugar cravings, thus making it easier to control weight. At the U.S. Department of Agriculture, botanist and herb researcher Jim Duke, Ph.D., has found that cinnamon increases a type of immune cell, called leukocytes, thus improving the body's ability to fight bacterial infections and viruses.

Nettle supplements are derived from the upper leaves and stems of a stinging, weed-like plant (Urtica dioica, U. urens) found around the world. It is also known as stinging nettle. As a heating herb, it is taken as a general tonic and to relieve hay fever, asthma, high blood pressure, PMS, and eczema. Nettle has astringent and diuretic properties. Applied externally by flailing a joint with the stinging plant (urtication), it may help relieve the pain of arthritis and gout. Nettles are also taken as a superfood, rich in vitamins C and E and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, silica, and potassium, which are important for healing broken bones, muscle strains, and tendon injuries. Nettle tea is used to curb appetite and cravings and assist in weight loss. The tea is made as a standard infusion. You can sprinkle dried nettles on salads, soups, and vegetables. It is sold dried and freeze-dried and in capsules, tinctures, concentrated drops, and extracts.

Royal Jelly is a light-colored, highly nutritious, gelatinous substance secreted in the salivary glands of young honeybee workers. In the hive, royal jelly is used to feed all bee larvae for the first few days of their lives and then to stimulate the growth and development of larvae chosen to be queen bees, who feed on royal jelly exclusively. As a supplement, it is taken to prolong youth, increase longevity, and boost energy levels. Proponents also claim that it supports the adrenal glands, helps people lose weight, and combats fatigue. It is rich in amino acids, certain fatty acids, minerals, enzymes, and B vitamins, especially pantothenic acid, which is essential for many metabolic processes. Royal jelly may benefit some bone and joint disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis. Traditional Chinese herbalists often combine it with ginseng, astragalus, and other tonic herbs. It is available in liquid and capsules.
