Clinical Trial to Assess Chiropractic Care in the Treatment of Asthma
The Foundation for Chiropractic Education and Research (FCER) has approved funding for a clinical trial to be conducted in Australia over the next 18 months. A clinical investigation will assess the effects of chiropractic on both the physiological and global symptoms of patients with asthma. A total of 420 subjects, 315 of whom suffer from asthma, will be divided into groups of 105 each and tracked. Previous studies suggest that a statistically significant pattern of spinal dysfunction is observed in young asthmatics, anxiety is associated with asthma, and cortisol levels may decrease in asthmatics following spinal manipulation. A quarter of a million dollars has been approved to help fund this project.

Major League Baseball Team Utilizes Chiropractic Care
The San Diego Padres® credit chiropractic care with helping to keep players healthy. The September 2000 issue of Chiropractic Products magazine featured Padres® players Tony Gwynn, Trevor Hoffman and Woody Williams, along with team chiropractor, Craig Cook, DC, on the cover of the magazine. Two hours before the game, several of the Padres® players receive chiropractic adjustments. According to Dr. Cook, "Chiropractic care is something that, for them, can make the difference between first and second place."

Older Americans Use Alternative Care
A study in the Journal of the American Geriatric Society reported that 30 percent of Americans 65 years of age and older utilized alternative care during the past year. Of methods used, chiropractic care ranked highest. Herbal remedies, relaxation techniques, vitamin use and spiritual healing were also listed among those that seniors used.

Ankle Adjustments Most Effective in Reducing Pain
A study to determine if adjusting the ankle as a treatment of ankle sprains found this treatment to be superior to ultrasound therapy. Thirty patients, with subacute and chronic grade I and grade II ankle sprains, were divided into two groups. Although both groups showed improvement, statistically significant differences in favor of the adjustment group were noted with respect to reduction in pain, increased ankle range of motion and ankle function.

Chiropractic Contributes To Pain Management of Cancer Patients
Chiropractors can be key contributors to the pain management of oncology patients. Although oncologists institute treatment for a cancer patient’s primary disease process, chiropractors help provide options for decreasing pain and improving function. As part of a cancer rehabilitation team, the chiropractor can provide treatment that can enhance a patient's quality of life. Treatment may benefit those patients experiencing pain from the side effects of treatment or from the disease process itself. The chiropractor's treatment may include manipulation, soft tissue techniques, physiotherapeutic modalities, exercise and ergonomic counseling.
