Chiropractic – Here To Stay
Chiropractors and chiropractic patients in five areas within the United States and one within Canada were interviewed to collect data on chiropractic in North America. Their findings after more than 1,400 interviews: “Doctors of chiropractic have firmly established themselves within the health care system in the United States and Canada and are able to attract patients who come to them directly for treatment, for largely back-related conditions, and who are willing to pay for their care.”

Back Problems Can Start In Childhood
When researchers used MRI studies to evaluate the spines in the general population of 13 year-old children, they revealed some disturbing findings. Through these MRI studies, they found visible signs of spinal disc degeneration in approximately 1/3 of the children. These findings highlight the importance of having children checked out by a licensed chiropractor for the detection of spinal problems. Like most things, early detection is key.

A Call To Action To Extend Chiropractic Benefits
U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Ala., has introduced legislation that would extend chiropractic health benefits to U.S. military retirees, dependents and survivors. According to the president of the ACA (American Chiropractic Association), "Life as we know it is a direct result of the service and sacrifices of our veterans, soldiers and their families. Behind every member of the armed forces is a family who deserves to be taken care of, and it is unjust to provide them with anything but the very best health care available", "Families and retirees will benefit from the safe, effective care that only chiropractic can provide." A similar bill was introduced last year during the 108th Congressional session. However, the bill was not signed into law by the end of the Congressional session, and thus a new bill must be reintroduced. After introduction, support must be garnered and another set of co-sponsors must sign on to both a House and a Senate bill before it can be signed into law. As part of this effort, the ACA is asking Americans to take action by calling their representatives in the U.S. House and urging them to join as original co-sponsors of the legislation. Representatives can be reached by calling the U.S. Capitol switchboard at (202) 225-3121.

Dark Chocolate Rules
Want a delicious way to reduce blood pressure and boost your cardiovascular status? According to a new study, dark chocolate can help. Italian researchers found individuals eating 100 grams of dark chocolate daily for approximately 2 weeks reduced blood pressure and increased their sensitivity to insulin – important for metabolizing sugar. Similar results were not found with white chocolate. Dark chocolate contains high amounts of flavonoids – powerful antioxidants. Antioxidants are responsible for neutralizing potentially cell-damaging substances known as oxygen-free radicals. Beware, 100 grams of dark chocolate brings with it approximately 500 calories. So, if you’re going to reap those health benefits through a dose of dark chocolate, you’ll need to cut back your calories elsewhere or increase your physical activities!
