New Study Supports Spinal Manipulation
The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) is applauding a new study from the Medical Research Council (MRC) that shows spinal manipulation - the primary form of care performed by doctors of chiropractic - combined with an exercise program offers effective treatment for those suffering from back pain. The study, published in the November 19, 2004 issue of the British Medical Journal, found that a collective approach to back pain treatment provided "significant relief of symptoms and improvements in general health." According to the ACA, the MRC study is one of a number of recent studies regarding chiropractic's effectiveness for back pain over traditional medical care.

Don’t Forget Your Neck Exercises
A recent study conducted on individuals with chronic neck pain found those who performed a properly designed neck exercise program over 6 weeks had significantly superior reduction in pain and disability as well as much increased neck strength. Chiropractors often incorporate exercises into the treatment programs of many patients. Be sure to ask us if therapeutic spinal exercises might be appropriate for your condition!

Government Gives To Chiropractic Student Loan Program
On December 8, 2004 legislation passed providing $2 million in funding to expand and extend a pilot program allowing doctors of chiropractic to participate in the Nation Health Service Corps (NHSC) student loan repayment program. This is an important step for chiropractors and indicates their growing role in federal health care programs.

Herbal Extract Reduces Migraines
Exciting findings from a recent study indicate extracts from the root of the plant butterbur can significantly reduce the frequency of migraine headaches. Of the 230 patients in the study, those taking 75 milligrams of butterbur twice daily were able to reduce their number of migraine attacks by 45 percent, compared with 28 percent in the placebo group. According to researchers, the results were comparable to those of leading prescription drugs. And, since many people don't like the idea of taking a prescription medication every day, butterbur could be an excellent alternative that now has a firm base of scientific support. Researchers cautioned that since raw butterbur root contains toxins that are removed during the manufacturing process, patients should only use commercially available products rather than "home-brewed" butterbur extract.

Fruits, Veggies Lower Kids' Blood Pressure
A new study published in the journal Epidemiology finds preschoolers who eat the recommended four servings of fruits and vegetables daily may have lower blood pressures in early adolescence. According to study author, Dr. Lynn Moore of Boston University School of Medicine, “The roots of high blood pressure and other diseases that we acquire as adults can be found in childhood. Those who develop high blood pressure earlier in life, say as a young adult, rather than during middle age or later will be at much higher risk for heart attack, stroke, and other disabling conditions at a younger age."
