Back Pain… Elementary?
Recent research shows low back pain in children and adolescents increases with age. There is also a correlation between low back pain in adolescence and that experienced in adulthood. For this reason, researchers evaluated the likelihood that children's elementary school environment contributed to the development of their back problems. Things studied included backpack and student weight, availability of storage facilities, appropriateness of chair and desk height, seating arrangements during frontal lessons and physical activity during recess. Researchers found shortcomings in all areas and recommended an urgent need for health promotions programs to increase awareness and reduce risks in the school environment.

All For One and One For All
According to several studies, back pain patients receiving physical therapy alone are not receiving optimal care. Other therapies such as intense physical training, occupational therapy, psychological support and of course chiropractic care are an important part of the equation in getting well. Incorporating a number of these therapies has also been shown to significantly lower the number of sick-leave days.

Let’s Get Healthy
According to a recent article in The Journal of the American Medical Association, the leading causes of death are preventable. More than 1/3 of all deaths are due to tobacco (435,000) and poor diet and lack of physical activity (400,000). The article stated, “poor diet and physical inactivity may soon overtake tobacco as the leading cause of death”. We urge you to make the decision to take charge of your health. If you need a gentle nudge in the healthy direction, we’re only a phone call away!

Neck/Back Pain in the Elderly
Researchers interviewed over 4,000 twins aged 70-102 to determine the prevalence of neck and back pain and its associations with other health problems. Results showed the overall 1-month prevalence for back pain in the elderly at 15%, for neck pain 11%, and for concurrent back and neck pain 11%. Back pain and neck pain were associated with a number of other diseases and with poorer self-rated health. Back and neck pain sufferers had significantly lower scores on physical but not cognitive functioning. Researchers concluded back pain and neck pain are common, intermittent symptoms in old age and are associated with general poor physical health in old age.
