It’s Not Just A Back Thing
A case report published in the prestigious Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics supports the notion that chiropractic’s benefits may go well beyond musculoskeletal pain. In this report, a 2-year old girl suffering from Myasthenia Gravis, an autoimmune condition resulting in fatigue and weakness of the muscles, seemed to have significantly benefited from chiropractic care. The diagnosis was made by both a pediatrician and medical neurologist. After 5 months of chiropractic care, all symptoms had disappeared. While this does not suggest chiropractic is a treatment for Myasthenia Gravis, it does support the belief that chiropractic care has benefits far beyond basic back problems.

When it comes to back problems, the causes are extremely diverse and poorly understood by the medical profession. This is one of the reasons back problems can be so difficult to manage. Starting Back Smarts Early On

Two recent studies highlight the importance of proper backpack use in children. According to these studies, heavy backpack use in schoolchildren can lead to the development of both poor posture and back pain. According to the American Chiropractic Association, the following tips should be practiced:
• Keep backpack weight no greater than 10 percent of child's bodyweight.
• Backpack should not hang greater than 4 inches below the waistline.
• Keep pointy/bulky objects away from area that rests on child's back.
• Avoid purchasing over-sized backpacks.
• Wear both shoulder straps to distribute weight evenly.
• Be sure shoulder straps are both wide and padded.
• Shoulder straps should be adjustable so backpack can be properly fitted.
