Spinning His Way to Victory with Chiropractic
Four-time consecutive Tour de France winner, Lance Armstrong, credits his victories with the assistance of chiropractic treatment. This is also the fourth year the U.S. Postal team has had Jeff Spencer, DC, as their team doctor. He has helped Lance keep his body together for the harsh demands of the Tour, which covers 2,032 miles through the mountains and flatlands of rural France. In addition to chiropractic adjustments, Dr. Spencer uses ice and taping to facilitate fluid exchange dynamics in areas of congestion and helps each rider watch their nutritional needs.

Amazing Adjustments Featured on PBS
PBS recently featured chiropractic treatment on its Body & Soul program. Titled, "Waking up the Brain: Amazing Adjustments", the show featured a segment on a woman who finds relief from extreme vertigo through chiropractic treatment. In addition, the show interviewed Ted Carrick, DC, on his work in treating patients who have not benefited from drugs and/or surgery. Overall, the program is a positive testimonial to the benefits of chiropractic.

Stay Active or Stay in Bed?
A recent study assessed whether being active is better than bed rest for the treatment of acute low back pain or sciatica (pain shooting down the leg). One trial of patients with acute, simple low back pain found small differences in functional status and length of sick leave in favor of staying active, as compared with advice to stay in bed 2 days. Another trial compared staying active to 14 days bed rest for patients with sciatic syndrome, and found no differences between the groups. Researchers concluded that staying active alone has little beneficial effect for patients with acute, simple low back pain, and little or no effect for patients with sciatica. There was also no evidence that advice to stay active is harmful for either acute low back pain or sciatica.

DVA Forms Chiropractic Advisory Committee
Six months after President Bush signed legislation mandating the establishment of a chiropractic health benefit within the Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) health care system, an 11-member advisory committee has been formed. The committee includes six chiropractors and five other healthcare related members. The law authorizes the hiring of doctors of chiropractic in the DVA health system, sets a broad scope of chiropractic practice, and allows the chiropractic profession to oversee the development and implementation of the new benefit through an advisory committee. The advisory committee is designed to help ensure appropriate input by the chiropractic profession into the implementation of the new benefit.
